Hayfield Water Supply
Morland Reservoir OS map c.1930
This is an impounding reservoir that took water from the surrounding moorland. In 1930 it was run by New Mills Urban District Council.

I was told verbally that 'the Morland Reservoir was build in 1885 by a Mr Sumner of Park Hall Estates. It was used until 1953 and destroyed c. 1999. There are underground tank or tanks on the opposite side of the road a little way down from the impounding reservoir. It is thought that the tank(s) took water from Morland Reservoir. It is said that the water was treated here with blocks of Alum.'

Alum is Aluminium Sulphate and is added to water to aid the sedimentation of particulate matter.

In 1939, the Chapel-en-le-Frith RDC said that a: 'Balance Tank built at Morland Road with a 3 inch main to existing supply.'

An undated comment from Nora Livesley. She said when living at Birch Vale that: 'we saw the men, with their instruments, in our field, but eventually they decided that a tank, or booster, on the other side of Morland Road, would give the necessary pressure.'

K B confirms that Nora lived at Morland Cottage adjacent to Morland House.
