Maurice Cass says: The ponds you can see in the foreground is the cooling water for the beam engines and takes no part in the treatment process. There was a coarse screen underground to prevent large objects passing forward to the pumps. The pre-limed sewage was pumped to Etwall, which was farmland compulsorily purchased by Burton Borough Council, and a technique called broad irrigation was used to treat the sewage. Basically that meant flooding the land allowing the water to percolate through the soil into an under drainage system which was connected to the River Trent in Willington. All the solid material was held back on the land which was ploughed in after the flooded area had dried out. As mentioned in the photos ploughing was undertaken by two Fowler ploughing stem engines. The engines stood on the tracks surrounding each field and a ride on plough was pulled across the field.
