Long Eaton and Sawley Sewage Disposal
Toton Sewage Works c.1935
Built 1925 for LEUDC at a cost of £25,000.
Transferred to STW 1974 and still in use in 2024.

Toton was built to replace the Station Road Sewage Works.

In 1937 the low level Intercepting for the Meadow Lane District was completed and in 1938 it was proposed to extend the works because of increased load from Chilwell - part of Beeston and Stapleford UDC.

By 1966 local residents of Chilwell, Attenborough and Beeston complained of the smell caused the drying of sludge in open beds necessitation storage in lagoons in inclement weather. Major extensions to the works were started in 1969 but not completed until 1973. This included the installation of a mechanical sludge pressing plant to replace the open drying beds, mixing tanks, loading facilities, pipe laying and general civil engineering work to accommodate the mechanical plant. Included in the contract is the installation of intercepting screening plant for flocculent fats and improved arrangements for desludging the existing storm water tanks.

In 1973 the Foul Sewerage Relief Scheme is completed to deal with surcharging during periods of heavy rainfall.
